Brendan Rodgers says the recent international break has provided valuable time for reflection, recovery and preparation ahead of what promises to be another demanding spell for the Hoops.

The Celtic manager welcomed the opportunity to reset, explaining that while some players have been away on international duty, others have made the most of the break to build fitness and sharpen up at Lennoxtown.

“I think it’s always a good opportunity,” the manager said.

“Over the course of the international break, some of our younger players have been able to get minutes and games, while others have used the time to work on their football fitness.

“It’s also important to have that period of rest when you’ve just come off the back of a hectic schedule and are preparing for another one. Not everyone is back yet, but the players who are will start to reintroduce themselves over the next few days.

‘The ability to reset is what’s most important.’

“Coming off the back of a really good win (against Motherwell) allows you to reflect, refocus your goals and reinforce the importance of hard work for what’s ahead.”

With a busy month of fixtures to come before the next international break, the manager says the focus is on maintaining results while building momentum and consistency.

“I think it’s just going to take time, but while you’re waiting for that, you still have to win games,” he added.

“We’ve shown glimpses of what we want, but not consistently enough. That said, the team is still winning domestically, and that’s very important.

“It really typifies the mentality within the group. We’ve already had late winners this season, and that shows the spirit and togetherness we have. The push we get from the supporters really galvanises the players, this is a team that goes right to the very end.”

There was also a welcome update on Alistair Johnston, who has returned to training after injury. Rodgers praised the Canadian’s importance to the side while highlighting the impact of those who stepped in during his absence.

“He’s obviously a big loss, having someone of that quality out is always a blow,” said the manager.

“But it’s allowed us to give opportunities to young Colby Donovan, who’s done very, very well, and to Anthony Ralston, who’s always a reliable and capable player for the club.

“There’s no doubt Alistair has been a pivotal part of the team for a number of years. The power and balance he brings, both offensively and defensively, are very important for us. It’s great to see him back on the pitch and showing that strength again in training.”

Looking ahead to a packed domestic and European calendar with crunch games against Hearts and Rangers likely circled for significance, the Irishman called on the squad and supporters alike to relish what lies ahead.

“Let’s embrace all the challenges that come our way, both domestically and in Europe,” he said.

“It’s a really exciting period, this is what Celtic is all about. Playing in big games and testing ourselves on the biggest stage.

“That collective spirit and togetherness are at the heart of what we do. We’re excited for the games ahead, ready to face every challenge, and determined to do it together, everyone fighting for the same cause.”

And when asked about Scott Brown’s recent red card in a Legends match in Rotterdam against Feyenoord, the manager couldn’t help but smile.

“I’ve just seen the headline,” he said.

“He’s still super competitive, even though he’s been finished playing for a few years. He’ll never lose that edge. He’s a great guy and was an amazing servant for Celtic, it’s good to see he still has those competitive juices flowing.”
