Celtic’s old European rivals Boavista forced into extinction | OneFootball

Boavista have been forced into extinction after succumbing to financial difficulties. Celtic took on the Portuguese outfit twice in European football including in the semi-final of the UEFA Cup back in 2003…

Celtic were pitted against the Portuguese side in the cup winners cup back in 1975, and prevailed 3-1 on aggregate. Playing out a 0-0 draw in Porto, before winning 3–1 at Celtic park a fortnight later, thanks to goals from Kenny Dalglish, Shuggie Edvaldsson, and Dixie Deans.

The Celtic Park clash also happened to be the first time the club had worn squad numbers on the back of those famous hooped jerseys.

Most Celtic supporters will remember the Portuguese side when we faced them in the semi finals of the UEFA Cup back in 2003.

We prevailed on that occasion also, winning 2-1 on aggregate, with Henrik Larsson scoring both goals as we booked a historical final place against Boavista’s city rivals Porto. Although the least said about the final the better!

The side based in Porto were founded in 1903 and won nine major honours, including a Primeria league title in 2001, becoming the first, and still the only side outside of the big three of Benfica, Porto, and Sporting Lisbon to be crowned champions of Portugal.

Their troubles started long ago, but came to a head in the past year or so, resulting in the demise of the club.

After being prohibited from signing players in five transfer windows, Boavista signed nine players in one day in February 2025.

In 2024/25 the team were relegated in last place after a 4–1 loss away to Arouca on the final day, prompting a pitch invasion by some of the 2,000 travelling fans. The club were barred from playing in Liga Portugal 2 by the Portuguese league authority, resulting in relegated team Oliveirense receiving a reprieve.

Boavista was also refused registration in 2025 to the third-tier or fourth-tier Campeonato de Portugal, which resulted in a change of company, resulting in the club starting the new season in the Liga Pro, the new elite league of the Porto Football Association.

The club itself entered a team in the fourth division of the district leagues, a decision which led to the establishment of by the supporters’ group of the same name.

Having had losses by default as a result of never turning up for games, the club-run team withdrew from competition at the end of October.

On 16 July 2026, Boavista received a court order to cease all activities by 31 July and hand over its premises, following years of financial difficulties. The club’s insolvency process was linked to unpaid obligations to creditors, despite previous attempts to restructure its debts.

Basically, Boavista failed to pay their debts, and are now confined to history. Unless they make a comeback as The Boavista FC. Maybe this is one for Carlos Verde?
