Genk have turned down a £9 million offer from Feyenoord for former Celtic striker Oh Hyeon-gyu…

The South Korean forward joined the Belgian pro-league last summer, with the Scottish champions receiving a reported £2.5 million upfront and an additional £1 million tied to performance bonuses. It remains unclear if the Hoops included a sell-on clause in the deal for the 24-year-old.*

ps included a sell-on clause in the deal for the 24-year-old.

Feyenoord are keen to secure Oh’s signature, but Genk have firmly stated they will not sell the international, who remains under contract for another three years with the current Belgian title-holders.

Though he primarily came off the bench in his debut season with Genk, starting just three league matches, he still managed to find the net an impressive nine times.

With Genk forward Tolu Arokodare attracting interest from Manchester United and other European clubs and likely to be sold, Genk plan to make Oh their frontman next season – meaning Feyenoord would need to significantly raise their bid to stand any chance of signing the ex-Celtic forward.

Last summer, Oh admitted that Adam Idah’s arrival at Celtic prompted his decision to move on, despite having scored 12 goals across all competitions and starting on only six occasions under Brendan Rodgers.

Speaking via Glasgow Times, Oh said: “I had lost my place in my national team because I was no longer playing for Celtic. It was then I knew I had to get a transfer.”

“I scored 12 goals in total for Celtic, but I hardly played in the last six months. They had brought in a new striker, someone with a different profile – a big, strong boy – and they had to find a solution for me. I thought that was a shame at first because I really loved Celtic. It’s a great club.”

“But when Genk came calling, I didn’t hesitate. I had a few options in the English Championship, but I just wanted to come here. When you see all the players who came through here – Kevin De Bruyne, Thibaut Courtois, Leandro Trossard and more. That’s impressive, isn’t it?”

Oh sell-on clause

* Incidentally here’s a ‘Grok’ response on X, to questions from Celtic supporters about a possible sell-on clause, which we’d assume would definitely be included in any relevant transfer deal from Celtic.

GROK: ‘It’s possible Celtic have a sell-on fee for Oh Hyeon-gyu, as some reports mention “future add-ons” in his £4.5m transfer to Genk in July 2024. However, there’s no official confirmation of such a clause. Feyenoord’s €10m bid was rejected by Genk, who see Oh as key for the upcoming season. Celtic’s history suggests they might benefit from a future sale, but without contract details, this remains speculative.’

Our opinion is that there will be a sell-on clause involved and Celtic could be in line for another windfall this summer if Feyenoord get their man.
