César Peixoto plays down Benfica rumours amid Mourinho uncertainty | OneFootball

César Peixoto has distanced himself from suggestions he could replace José Mourinho at Benfica, keeping the focus on Gil Vicente’s next match against Tondela. According to Glorioso 1904, the coach said the rumours did not merit his attention.

He made clear he would not be drawn on a putative shortlist and underlined his respect for Benfica, its head coach and his own club.

Peixoto added that he feels comfortable and fulfilled in charge at Gil Vicente as he prepared his side for the fixture that closes the 29th round of the Liga Portugal Betclic.

The former Benfica player, who worked under Jorge Jesus, was speaking amid ongoing scrutiny of Mourinho’s position following recent poor results, including a slip in Rio Maior.

There has been speculation that president Rui Costa does not intend to renew Mourinho’s contract, although the coach has repeatedly said he wants to continue.

Ruben Amorim has reportedly already made a decision on his own future.
