A narrow win and a narrow defeat: there was a fine line between joy and sorrow for Eintracht pair Farès Chaibi and Ellyes Skhiri on Matchday 2 of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite a late fightback, Tunisia and Ellyes Skhiri went down 3-2 to Nigeria in their second match in Group C at the Africa Cup of Nations. Having started the tournament with a 3-1 win over Uganda – including a goal from Skhiri – the Eagles of Carthage found themselves 3-0 down after 67 minutes. The Frankfurt midfielder, who played the full match, and his teammates then hit back with goals from Montassar Talbi and Ali Abdi, but the Tunisians were unable to complete the turnaround.

Tunisia will seal their place in the round of 16 with victory in their final group game against Tanzania on Tuesday 30 December (17:00 CET). If they draw or lose, the North Africans must rely on Uganda not beating Nigeria by the required goal difference.

Chaibi reaches next round with Algeria

Meanwhile, Farès Chaibi’s Algeria have already booked their ticket for the last 16. The Fennecs followed up their 3-0 opening win over Sudan with a 1-0 victory over Burkina Faso, which confirmed their place in the knockout stages with six points and no goals conceded after two games. Captain Riyad Mahrez scored the only goal from the penalty spot, while Chaibi came on in the closing stages. Algeria’s next match is against Equatorial Guinea on New Year’s Eve at 17:00 CET.
