Manchester City expected to face keen loan interest from the Championship this summer regarding the future of one of their brightest prospects.
Following the conclusion of the Pep Guardiola era, sporting director Hugo Viana is now meticulously planning the first-team and Elite Development Squad (EDS) pathways to future-proof the club.
While City’s primary focus in the way of potential outgoings remains fixed on more high-profile interest – such as managing a contract extension for Josko Gvardiol and a possible exit for Nathan Ake – Viana is concurrently determining which academy prodigies are ready for senior exposure in the English football pyramid.
At the forefront of this internal assessment appears to be 18-year-old ball-playing centre-back Stephen Mfuni, who has enjoyed a spectacular rise through the club’s youth infrastructure, playing a pivotal role in an FA Youth Cup final triumph over Leeds United before making his senior first-team debut during a 10-1 FA Cup victory over Exeter City.
Recognising the need to transition his attributes out of youth football, City sanctioned a January loan to Championship side Watford, sparking an eye-catching senior breakthrough that has now captured the attention of other secondary division heavyweights.
According to a new report from Football League World, Stephen Mfuni’s performances at Vicarage Road during the second-half of last season have put Derby County on ‘red alert’, with the Rams now lining up a loan move for the highly-rated centre-back.
Derby County’s aggressive pursuit of the England Under-19 international is a direct consequence of experiencing his elite tactical maturity firsthand.
During the second-half of the 2025/26 Championship campaign, Mfuni stepped seamlessly into Watford’s first-team set-up, making eight senior appearances and notably voted Watford’s Player of the Match for a performance at left-back during a 2-0 victory against Derby themselves on February 21.
For Manchester City, a season-long loan under the guidance of Derby staff offers an environment to refine Mfuni’s traits, particularly with reports indicating an arrival at Pride Park for City Football Academy Under-21 coach Ben Wilkinson – joining Jon Eustace’s team.

Incoming City manager Enzo Maresca’s long-term tactical spine is expected to demand defenders who have personality on the ball and can step confidently into midfield to create numerical overloads – qualities Mfuni possesses.
