Charlton Athletic plot move to sign ex-Reading midfielder | OneFootball

Charlton are reportedly plotting a move to sign former Reading youngster, Jordan Holsgrove ahead of the 2026/27 Championship campaign.

Charlton Athletic haven't been shy in adding to their squad this summer, as they look to build on a 19th-place finish in the Championship last term.

Nathan Jones' side won promotion into the second-tier in the 2024/25 league campaign, and will be pleased to have retained their status as a Championship club for another season.

They struggled to build momentum towards the end of last season, and will be eager to put together a run of positive results in the new season, which gets underway in less than a month's time.

Jones has been busy in the summer already, with the likes of Karlan Grant, Danny McNamara, Ivan Mesik, and Billy Koumetio arriving at The Valley on permanent deals.

Further reinforcements are potentially on the way as well, with Charlton continuing to be linked to new signings, although it remains to be seen as to how far ahead they are when it comes to negotiations.

A midfielder is seemingly on Jones' radar ahead of the new season, and he'll be hoping he can get the deal done in good time, as Charlton go through their pre-season preparations.

Charlton are reportedly eyeing a move for former Reading midfielder, Jordan Holsgrove according to The Daily Telegraph's Mike McGrath.

Holsgrove is currently playing his football for Portuguese top-flight side, Estoril, which is where he's been since 2024. The Scotsman has previously been on the books with Celta Vigo, Pacos de Ferreira, and Olympiacos before moving to Portugal.

The 26-year-old made 35 appearances in all competitions for Estoril last season, and clearly has something about him with clubs keen on landing his signature.

He has two years remaining on his contract with Estoril, but it's claimed by Mike McGrath that he is yet to reach a fresh agreement with the Portuguese side over a new and improved deal.

German side Werder Bremen are also believed to be keen on a deal to sign Holsgrove, who seemingly isn't short of alternative options ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Holsgrove was highly regarded in his time with Reading as a youngster, and even though he didn't make a first-team appearance for the Berkshire-based side, his potential was there for all to see.

The midfielder has been capped at youth level for Scotland, and it would be interesting to see if the door opened on a potential pathway into the Scottish senior team, who will be under new management after Steve Clarke's departure this summer.

Charlton have some strong options in the centre of midfield, but Nathan Jones has clearly identified Holsgrove as someone who could take them to the next level.

He's calm and composed on the ball, and offers much-needed protection to the defence, as he's more of a defensive midfielder, as opposed to a creative outlet further up the pitch.

Charlton take on Derby County on the opening weekend of fixtures in the Championship, which will be a tough test for Nathan Jones' side, as the Rams were in and around the play-off positions last season.
