Chelsea have agreed a six-year deal with Valentin Barco and are now hoping to seal the signing with sister club Strasbourg, according to Andres Onrubia Ramos.

Chelsea are already making moves to bolster their squad at the end of the season, following what is likely to be a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

The Blues are pushing to secure the arrival of the line-breaking maestro at Stamford Bridge after an outstanding season in France.

Barco left Brighton & Hove Albion as a struggling left-back to join Strasbourg, where current Chelsea boss Liam Rosenior converted him to a midfielder.

Rosenior’s presence at Chelsea has reportedly helped convince Barco to move to West London.

Only two players have created more big chances than Barco in Ligue 1 this term (13), and he has been one of the best players in the French top flight.

Described as ‘brilliant and box office’, he will be a stellar addition to the Chelsea roster.

However, this is exactly the kind of move that sums up Chelsea’s scattergun recruitment in recent years.

Barco is a fine talent, no doubt, but he solves a problem Chelsea do not have.

This is already a side capable of creating chances at will. The numbers and performances show that creativity is not the issue.

The real problems lie elsewhere. They are defensively fragile and lack a cutting edge in wide areas.

Instead of addressing those glaring weaknesses, Chelsea are once again chasing a player who fits a trend rather than a need.

It is a familiar pattern. Stockpiling needless talents while ignoring the spine of the team.

What this squad desperately requires is an experienced, commanding centre-back to bring organisation and leadership.

They also need a ruthless left winger who can take on his man and consistently turn chances into goals.

Until the Blues start prioritising necessity over novelty, moves like this will continue to feel misguided.
