Chelsea Women are set to bolster their already impressive squad after reportedly agreeing a world record transfer fee for Naomi Girma.
The USWNT defender is on the verge of moving to west London after the Blues “agreed to terms” on a $1.1 million (£890,000) deal with NWSL outfit San Diego Wave FC, The Athletic reports.
Chelsea have not finalised the deal as they are still in the “negotiation process” over the transfer and Girma’s personal terms. She is currently under contract until 2026.
Girma reported for the first day of pre-season training on Tuesday and was named on the Wave’s roster, which was published earlier in the day. It’s claimed that she “requested” a move last season.
If the 24-year-old does sign for the the WSL side, then she will become the first women’s player to move clubs for over a million dollars.
The world record for a transfer fee was broken in February of last year when Bay FC paid Real Madrid £685k ($862k) for Racheal Kundananji. Chelsea set the WSL record last January when they bought Mayra Ramirez from Levante for £426k ($544k).
Eight of the top ten most expensive transfers in women’s football history have been completed in the last year, highlighting the rapid growth of the women’s game globally.
Former Chelsea boss and current USWNT manager Emma Hayes called Girma “the best defender I’ve ever seen” during 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Girma has twice been named the NWSL defender of the year and helped the Wave win the NWSL Shield in 2023 and the Challenge Cup the following year. She was also a member of the USA team won the gold medal in Paris last August.
