In a report by The Telegraph, it has emerged that Chelsea and Manchester United are each considering a bold summer move involving Alejandro Garnacho and Christopher Nkunku — two of the Premier League’s most talented yet unsettled stars.
While not formally in swap deal discussions, both clubs are aware of each other’s interest and could pursue separate transfers that would see Garnacho and Nkunku move in opposite directions. Each deal would address specific tactical and squad needs, particularly as both players are reportedly keen to leave their current clubs.
Alejandro Garnacho, the 20-year-old Argentine winger, appears to have reached the end of his Manchester United journey. According to The Telegraph, “Garnacho has been told he has no future at United under head coach Ruben Amorim” and has openly signalled his intent to depart.

His social media post showing himself in an Aston Villa shirt with Marcus Rashford’s name on the back fuelled exit rumours and, although Villa have been linked, Chelsea may now be front-runners. The Blues are actively seeking a left winger and Garnacho is one of three names on their shortlist, alongside Jamie Gittens and Malik Fofana.
Crucially, Chelsea “explored a deal for Garnacho…in the winter transfer window,” which reawakened United’s interest in Nkunku. Garnacho’s market value has soared to around £60 million, reflecting his potential and Premier League readiness.
Christopher Nkunku’s move to Stamford Bridge in 2023 was meant to bring creativity and cutting edge, but the Frenchman’s first season was derailed by injuries. Since recovering, he has failed to secure a consistent starting role under Enzo Maresca.
“Nkunku’s impact at Chelsea was held up by injuries before…he struggled to hold down a regular starting place,” notes The Telegraph. His favoured position as a second striker is currently blocked by the in-form Cole Palmer, while the arrival of Liam Delap adds further competition.
United’s director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, previously worked with Nkunku at both Chelsea and RB Leipzig, making him a strong advocate for the player. That connection may yet prove pivotal.
While Chelsea’s focus on Garnacho makes sense tactically, there is also urgency due to off-pitch complications. Mykhailo Mudryk has been charged by the FA for doping offences and “is facing a lengthy ban”, leaving a void on the left flank. Noni Madueke is also attracting interest, which could further thin the squad.
This has led to Chelsea keeping their options open: “Chelsea could sign more than one of their winger targets depending on other business with all options currently considered open.”
Though Jamie Gittens is expected to eventually sign, having already attracted a £42 million bid, Garnacho’s Premier League experience could make him the more immediate solution.
While the article makes clear “there is no expectation of a swap deal being negotiated,” a pair of separate deals could make strategic and financial sense. Garnacho would get the game time and tactical freedom he craves, Nkunku would get a reset in a system better suited to his style, and both clubs could strengthen where they most need it.
With Christopher Vivell’s insight and links to both clubs, his influence “could play a key role” in facilitating what might become one of the most intriguing transfer storylines of the summer.
From a Manchester United fan’s perspective, this report sparks a complex blend of frustration, curiosity and reluctant acceptance. Garnacho’s talent is undeniable. He is fast, unpredictable and a proven match-winner in moments. Seeing him frozen out by Amorim feels not just bold, but potentially misguided.
If this truly reflects United’s stance, then fans would rightly ask: is the manager willing to offload one of our brightest young stars for a player whose Chelsea career hasn’t ignited? That’s a big gamble.
That said, Nkunku’s potential cannot be ignored. His RB Leipzig form was electric, and he’s had an unlucky start at Chelsea. Under the right manager, in the right system, he could rediscover that level. Given Amorim’s preference for fluid, attacking football and a second striker role, Nkunku may fit more naturally than people think.
Still, fans will want reassurances this is more than a “try one, lose another” scenario. If Garnacho is sold, United need to gain a clear tactical advantage and not simply swap one misfit for another.
Many supporters would rather see Garnacho stay and flourish at Old Trafford, but if his mind is made up, the club must ensure the deal is about progression, not panic.
