Chelsea are closing in on an agreement to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new manager, according to journalists Ben Jacobs and Alex Crook.
The Blues are expected to formalise the move to bring him to Stamford Bridge shortly after Saturday’s FA Cup final.
Chelsea are edging closer to finally settling on the man they believe can spearhead their long-term rebuild.
Alonso has emerged as the leading candidate ahead of a strong shortlist that included Marco Silva, Andoni Iraola, Oliver Glasner and Filipe Luis.
The Spanish tactician’s growing reputation across Europe made him one of the most sought-after names on the market this summer.
Since leaving Real Madrid in January, Alonso has been heavily linked with several elite jobs, including a potential return to Liverpool.
Newcastle United were also monitoring his situation while Marseille tried to appoint him in February. However, Chelsea have moved decisively ahead of their rivals.
Despite his relatively short managerial career, Alonso’s record is hugely impressive. He won 24 of his 34 matches in Spain.
His previous work at Bayer Leverkusen brought him into the limelight.
Alonso guided the German club to their first-ever Bundesliga title and masterminded a remarkable unbeaten league campaign.
Chelsea’s owners will hope that pedigree finally translates into stability at Stamford Bridge after years of chaos in the dugout.
The Blues have changed managers repeatedly throughout their rebuild, without ever truly finding the right fit other than Enzo Maresca.
If Alonso is appointed, they must match it with smarter recruitment. Chelsea cannot afford another summer of expensive scattergun signings.
They finally appear close to getting the managerial appointment right, and now the players around him must also make sense.
