In a recent report, journalist Graeme Bailey stated that Chelsea are facing stiff competition for Colorado Rapids defender Lucas Herrington. It has been mentioned that the Blues would have to compete with Barcelona, Liverpool, Everton, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Manchester City in the race to sign the Australian whizkid this summer.
Herrington had a solid campaign at Colorado last season when he put in a run of impressive performances for them on the defensive end of the field. The 18-year-old scored one goal and secured one assist in 17 appearances for the MLS outfit in the previous campaign across all competitions.
The talented teenager is currently among the best young defenders in his homeland. Thus, Chelsea would do well to bring him on board this off-season.
His current contract at the MLS club will run out at the end of 2029, which could make it tough for the Blues to sign him on the cheap later this year.

Herrington is a solid tackler of the ball and can sense the danger well to secure possession back for his team inside his half. He usually puts his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot and can use his strong 1.93m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air.
The Australian talent is primarily a central defender but can also serve as a right-back if told to do so. However, there are some question marks over whether he can adapt to the high intensity of the Premier League if the Blues manage to snap him up later this summer.
We can expect Herrington to enhance the quality of Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso’s defence in the long run. He is already good enough to challenge for a regular spot in the West London club’s match-day squad next season.
At 18, Herrington has got the potential to be a future star in English football. Hence, the Blues would be wise to get a deal over the line for him in this transfer window. He is undoubtedly a star in the making and would be a great signing for the Blues in the long term.
