Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Rayo Vallecano left-back Pep Chavarria after making significant progress in negotiations with the Spanish club.

According to The Athletic, the Blues are close to reaching an agreement with Rayo Vallecano, while the 28-year-old has already agreed personal terms with Chelsea ahead of a proposed move.

Chavarria is expected to be granted permission to undergo a medical once the final details between the clubs are resolved, with both sides said to be working amicably towards completing the transfer.

Chelsea have prioritised the signing of a left-back following Marc Cucurella’s departure to Real Madrid earlier this summer, leaving Jorrel Hato as the only recognised senior left-sided defender in Xabi Alonso’s squad.

The Spaniard arrives with extensive La Liga experience, having spent his entire professional career in Spain. He joined Rayo Vallecano from Real Zaragoza in 2022 and has since made 125 appearances for the Madrid-based club.

Chavarria also featured prominently during Rayo’s run to last season’s UEFA Conference League final, playing the full 90 minutes in the defeat to Crystal Palace.

The defender remains under contract with Rayo until 2030, with his current deal containing a reported €50 million (£42.8m) release clause. However, Chelsea are understood to be negotiating a separate agreement rather than triggering that clause.

Should the move be completed, Chavarria would become the latest addition to Alonso’s squad as Chelsea continue to strengthen ahead of the new Premier League season.
