Chelsea appear to be closing in on the £55million signing of Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, with negotiations reportedly entering a decisive phase. As per Simon Phillips via Substack — and confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on X — the Blues are in direct talks to secure the 20-year-old English forward. It’s understood that today could be pivotal in determining whether a deal is struck.
Chelsea’s confidence seems to be growing, though Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich are still believed to be monitoring the situation closely.
Dortmund are said to want a total package worth £55m for Gittens. Whether Chelsea will meet that valuation or attempt to negotiate a compromise remains to be seen. What’s clear, however, is that the player is very much on the radar and regarded as a high-priority target by the west London club.
Gittens has made a name for himself in the Bundesliga with his pace, close control, and ability to create chances from the left wing. With the departure of Jadon Sancho and the uncertainty around Mykhailo Mudryk, Chelsea’s interest in a natural wide threat is entirely logical.
Adding a player like Gittens, who combines raw athleticism with technical quality, aligns with Chelsea’s ongoing strategy of acquiring elite young talent. It’s a project with long-term ambitions and short-term benefits.
Should this deal go through, it will mark another significant step for head coach Enzo Maresca. Expectations are rising after Chelsea secured a top-four Premier League finish and lifted the Europa Conference League last season. With Gittens potentially joining a youthful squad, there will be pressure to hit the ground running.

From a Chelsea supporter’s standpoint, this is a move that reflects both ambition and continuity in recruitment strategy. Gittens is exactly the sort of player who could ignite Stamford Bridge — quick, fearless, and already tested at a high level in Germany. At 20, he’s not just a squad option, he’s a potential starter.
Supporters know the £55m fee won’t go unnoticed, but Chelsea have shown they’re willing to invest heavily in youth when the upside is clear. And with the uncertainty surrounding Mudryk’s future, bringing in someone of Gittens’ profile is as much a necessity as it is a luxury.
What will excite fans most is the potential tactical fluidity he offers. He’s not a one-dimensional wide man; he can cut inside, beat a man, and link up in tight spaces. That versatility will give Maresca options as he looks to builds a cohesive attacking unit.
Of course, there’s always a degree of risk. Premier League intensity has undone many promising talents before. But Gittens seems to have the temperament and technical foundation to cope. If this transfer goes ahead, fans will expect him to deliver — and they’ll be right to. Chelsea’s rebuild has been bold. Now it needs to be brilliant.
