Chelsea have confirmed that Levi Colwill has undergone successful surgery after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in pre-season training.

Colwill is a massive miss for the Blues this season after emerging as a leader last term.

The 22-year-old had only just returned to Cobham to begin preparations for the 2025/26 campaign when he sustained the injury during a session earlier this week.

“Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action,” a statement from Chelsea said on Thursday.

“Levi will now begin his recovery and be supported by the club’s medical department at Cobham during his rehabilitation phase.”

Colwill was a regular under manager Enzo Maresca last season, making 43 appearances in all competitions.

Hailed as a ‘fantastic talent’ by former manager Mauricio Pochettino, Colwill proved influential as Chelsea secured Champions League football and won the Europa Conference League.

He also travelled with the squad to the United States for the Club World Cup, helping Chelsea claim the title.

Chelsea do not need a replacement

While Colwill’s injury is a significant blow, Chelsea do not need to enter the market for a replacement.

The Blues have already secured the signing of highly-rated Dutch defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax, and boast substantial depth in central defence.

Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, Wesley Fofana, Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong are all in contention for starting roles.

Teenage Argentine prospect Aaron Anselmino is another option. Chelsea could also use Renato Veiga.

The Portuguese defender has been eyeing a move away from Stamford Bridge due to limited opportunities at left centre-back.

Despite Colwill’s lengthy spell on the sidelines, Chelsea have enough internal cover and are under no pressure to make another signing.

That has never stopped Chelsea from signing players. They were already stacked when they showed interest in signing Dean Huijsen before Real Madrid snapped him up.

The Blues could yet decide to enter the transfer market.
