Chelsea have confirmed that midfielder Dario Essugo has undergone surgery on a thigh injury.

The 20-year-old suffered an injury while on international duty with Portugal’s Under-21s and is now set for a spell on the sidelines.

“Medical assessments confirmed surgery would be the required course of action and Dario will now begin his recovery at Cobham, supported by the club’s medical department,” the club said in a statement.

Essugo joined Chelsea in June from Sporting CP in a deal worth around £18.5m.

He spent last season on loan at La Liga side Las Palmas, and has made three appearances for Chelsea since signing for the club, all of which came at the Club World Cup.

Chelsea have been handed a boost, however, with Romeo Lavia back in training over the international break.

The Belgian midfielder has struggled with injuries since signing from Southampton in 2023 and is yet to play this season.

But has been involved in training during the international break along with Benoit Badiashile, who has also been sidelined.
