Chelsea are considering a sensational move for Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, according to The Mirror.
New manager Xabi Alonso is ready to kickstart a major squad rebuild, so the Blues are expected to be active in the transfer market.
Alonso is reportedly the driving force behind the move for Costa, although it will take a significant fee for Chelsea to lure the Portuguese goalkeeper away from Porto.
The Portuguese champions are believed to value Costa at around £51 million, and that price could climb even higher depending on his performances at this summer’s World Cup.
As Portugal’s first-choice goalkeeper, Costa’s performances could potentially increase interest from clubs across Europe, meaning Chelsea will have their work cut out.
The 26-year-old is considered one of the best goalkeepers in Europe. Having come through the club’s academy, Costa is considered a fan favourite and played a huge role in Porto’s title win last season.
He kept 26 clean sheets in 49 appearances across all competitions, but his performance in the league was nothing short of outstanding.
The Portugal international kept a sensational 21 clean sheets in 33 games and conceded just 15 times throughout the 2025/26 season.
Alonso sees Costa as an upgrade on Robert Sanchez, whose future at Chelsea has been touch-and-go following a string of clumsy performances.
Sanchez has been Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper since joining from Brighton & Hove Albion, but consistency has been his Achilles Heel.
Filip Jorgensen was given a chance to stake his claim for a first-team spot during the season but failed to take the opportunity.
Alonso doesn’t want to rely on Sanchez next season, prompting Chelsea to explore their options, and The Mirror claims that Costa is ‘very much’ on the market.
With ambitions of returning to the top end of the Premier League and competing for major honours, Chelsea appear determined to bring in a goalkeeper capable of making a significant difference.
However, they’ll likely face serious competition from Paris Saint-Germain for the Porto shot-stopper.
Costa has previously been linked with a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United touted as a potential landing spot. But they went with Andre Onana instead.
