After a first half of the new Premier League season that probably went better than expected in the eyes of many, Chelsea’s excellent form has slipped away in recent weeks. A run of five games without a win occurred, made up of three draws and two defeats. But all is not lost, as the January transfer window could get Chelsea’s season back on track.
From late November into late December, Chelsea won five Premier League games in a row, defeating Leicester City, Aston Villa, Southampton, Spurs, and Brentford. At that point, while manager Enzo Maresca was keen to stress his side weren’t title contenders, the West Londoners were in the mix and looking like they’d rival Liverpool. However, this is when a run of five games without a win hit, and it’s seen them fall out of the Premier League’s top four.
Regardless of recent form, Chelsea are still viewed as a force to be reckoned with, and they’re more often than not the favourites to win, according to the latest Premier League betting. Maresca has stressed that his team need to get back to doing the basics well, as this will eventually lead to a change in their fortunes and good form returning consistently. But what also could help make that happen is what the club do in the January transfer window.
Since the club’s ownership changed hands, the new hierarchy have been more than willing to do business in January, and they’re expected to back Maresca this month as the Italian looks to make tweaks to his squad ahead of a push to cement the club’s place in the top four.
The club have already sanctioned the recalling of Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at fellow London-based outfit Crystal Palace, with the twenty-five-year-old expected to be involved at Stamford Bridge moving forward due to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashille being ruled out with injuries. Chelsea will also be without Mykhaylo Mudryk for the foreseeable future.
Surprisingly, it’s rumoured that Axel Disasi could depart in the coming weeks, which means Chelsea will likely add another centre-back to their ranks, with former player Marc Guehi a target. What this also shows is that this won’t be a window where a couple of adjustments are made to cover for injuries and so on. Instead, it’s going to be a window where squad shaping takes place.
With other players thought to be available for transfer, including summer signing Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and fellow central midfielders Carney Chukwuemeka and Cesare Cadadei, the club are pressing on with working towards their vision, which means moving players on who aren’t deemed to be able to help take the club forward as soon as possible, replacing them with better.
To some, this may look like a cutthroat approach, especially when you consider that recent arrivals are quickly shuffled towards the departure lounge. However, it will certainly be one way of remedying the team’s current malaise and getting them back on track in the second half of the season.
