It’s been confirmed that Valentin Barco will be leaving Strasbourg this summer, and everyone expects him to end up at Chelsea.

So how will new manager Xabi Alonso use him? On the London is Blue podcast they suggested that, while central midfield is an obvious fit, we could also see him used in other positions.

Barco could switch out wide for Chelsea

“Thirteen big chances created. [Chelsea] have struggled with the creative aspect since Palmer’s extended dip. I think there are only three people in Ligue 1 who have created more,” pundit CFC Central said.

“He’s somebody more as a central midfielder, somebody who is also comfortable playing as a wide midfielder, which could be quite interesting if we use wing backs.”

However, if he does play at wing back, he’s not going to be an Achraf Hakimi-style workhorse, the pundit was clear to point out.

“He doesn’t have the engine or the acceleration to make those off ball runs, he’s more of an on ball wizard.”
