Chelsea earn a point away to OL Lyonnes after entertaining draw

Chelsea and OL Lyonnes played out an entertaining goalless draw in France with two disallowed penalties and a goal ruled out for offside.

There was plenty of quality on display in the kind of game that we can usually expect to see towards the end of the tournament. However, by half-time despite the good football there were few true chances with the teams going in level.

The second half would promise plenty of incidents though. With seven minutes gone into the second half when Brazilian defender Tarciane looked to have fouled Sjoeke Nüsken.

Referee Marta Huerta was called to take another look at the VAR screen but after examining the position of Lucy Bronze, who let Melvine Malard's ball through her legs while in an offside position, she decided against a penalty. Tarciane didn't escape a booking though.

Both sides were searching for a goal and Lyon briefly thought they had found it in the 72nd minute when Salma Paralluelo's effort found the net but the Spanish forward was offside.

Shortly after that, Chelsea were awarded a penalty for Damaris Egurrola's foul on Lauren James. Once again VAR called the referee to have another look at it and she reversed her decision deciding that James had forced the contact.

There was still plenty of time for a winner and both teams had chances late on. First, James had a shot while in space in the box that she fired straight at Maria Grohs. Then, shortly after that Hannah Hampton had to make a superb save to keep out Ada Hegerberg's looping header.

Then, deep into stoppage time a low cross from Wieke Kaptein found Maika Hamano who fired her shot agonisingly wide.

In the end, a point a piece was probably a fair result after a great game between two of the competition's best.
