Enzo Fernandez serves the second of a two match ban imposed on him by Chelsea when the Blues take on Man City on Sunday. But even with that completed, the issues around him are hardly going away.
The midfielder cast doubt about his future at Chelsea, which was a large part of why the club had to respond to his comments. From their perspective, the best thing to do is try and move on, but nobody is sure where Enzo’s head is at right now.
For one thing, he was captaining the side before this suspension. That’s part of the reason his comments were considered so unacceptable. With Reece James likely out for another couple of weeks, will Enzo pick up the armband the moment he’s back in the team?
Liam Twomey’s piece for the Athletic notes that this squad is famously lacking “grizzles, inspirational leaders of men”. There are a few candidates, however, including Cole Palmer who captained the team for the first team when they played Port Vale at the weekend.
Chelsea have spent big on attackers over the last few years, while missing out on the pick of the bunch in Michael Olise.
Alejandro Garnacho is being linked with a loan move to River Plate, which says a lot about how his Chelsea spell is going.
