Chelsea fans have expressed concern after a clip of their celebrations following Saturday’s dramatic win over Liverpool involving Cole Palmer and Jorrel Hato generated much discussion on social media.
The injury-plagued Blues bounced back in style from successive Premier League losses and inflicted a third defeat inside a week on the defending champions at Stamford Bridge as substitute Estevao Willian popped up with a last-gasp winner in stoppage time to spark euphoric scenes after Moises Caicedo’s first-half stunner had earlier been cancelled out by Cody Gakpo.
Such a morale-boosting victory to follow the midweek Champions League triumph over Jose Mourinho’s Benfica came despite Chelsea missing a raft of players, with Benoit Badiashile and Josh Acheampong both going off hurt to add further to a defensive crisis that has already seen Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana all injured and Trevoh Chalobah suspended.
Manager Enzo Maresca - sent off for his celebrations following Estevao’s memorable first Chelsea goal - is also without the likes of Liam Delap and Dario Essugo due to long-term issues, though the most notable absentee is of course Palmer, who has become a talismanic figure in west London since his £42.5million transfer from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.

Palmer has been bothered all campaign so far by a lingering groin injury first suffered during a shortened pre-season period that followed Chelsea’s successful Club World Cup campaign in the United States in the summer, making just three starts across all competitions to date and being replaced after only 21 minutes of the 2-1 loss at Manchester United on September 20.
Maresca met with Chelsea’s medical staff following that match to discuss a new plan to protect Palmer, who it was later confirmed still did not need surgery but would be rested until after the October international break, ruling him out of the Premier League games against Brighton and Liverpool as well as the Champions League clash with Benfica and Carabao Cup third-round tie at Lincoln.
Palmer was unsurprisingly omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad for matches against Wales and Latvia, having also played no part against Andorra and Serbia last month.
However, he watched Chelsea’s rousing win over Liverpool from the sidelines at Stamford Bridge and could be seen joining in the celebrations on the pitch afterwards, giving Estevao a hug to congratulate him for his last-gasp heroics.
But it was a viral clip involving Palmer and Hato that caused plenty of consternation from Blues fans on social media.
In the video captured by Sky Sports’ cameras, an understandably jubilant and excited Hato can be seen joyously jumping into Palmer, who grimaced and immediately appeared to clutch in discomfort at his left groin before seeming to shake it off quickly as he then embraced Hato with a smile.
While there is no suggestion that the innocent action made Palmer’s injury any worse, his reaction has led to obvious concern among Chelsea fans as to his current condition and potential return date, as well as leading to a desire to see him take more of a backseat in such celebrations until the injury is healed.
