Former Brighton technical director David Weir has joined Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg as sporting director.
Weir, 55, left Brighton in September and, just two weeks later, was spotted at Old Trafford rubbing shoulders with Chelsea co-owner Behdad Eghbali and other club executives at Old Trafford as the Blues were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United.
In a statement, Strasbourg heralded Weir’s arrival as “part of Racing’s commitment to strengthening the structure of its sporting department.”
Weir is the latest in an ever-growing line of players and staff to have made the switch from Brighton to the BlueCo network. While on the south coast, he worked alongside Chelsea’s current co-sporting director Paul Winstanley, while current first-team stars such as Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro, and Marc Cucurella have also made the move.
He also worked with Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior at Brighton, and said he looks forward to working alongside him again.
“It is a great honour to join Racing, a historic club with a strong identity and growing ambition,” said Weir.
“I was convinced by the project and the quality of the people already in place. I am eager to settle in Strasbourg and become fully involved in the life of Racing.
“I look forward to working with Liam and all the teams to contribute to Racing’s success this season and in the years to come.”
Before taking over from Dan Ashworth as the Seagulls’ technical director, he served as pathway development manager, monitoring the club’s loanees.
Weir is expected to work closely with Chelsea in his new role. The Blues have exchanged players with the Ligue 1 side at a remarkable rate since they were bought by BlueCo in 2023.
The Blues currently have three players on loan in Alsace - Mike Penders, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez - and also sold Mathis Amougou and Ben Chilwell to them this summer.
Chelsea have also signed the Strasbourg captain, highly-rated young striker Emanuel Emegha, on a pre-contract agreement.
Weir was an accomplished player, spending eight years with Everton and a further five with Rangers before retiring in 2012. He also picked up 69 Scotland caps.
