According to Corriere dello Sport, former Cagliari sporting director Guido Angelozzi says Chelsea tracked Marco Palestra for a year before moving to complete the signing ahead of Inter.
Angelozzi, who signed Palestra for Cagliari last summer, said the Premier League club had been operating in the background during Inter’s extended pursuit of the Atalanta right-back.
He indicated Chelsea waited for the right moment to act, adding context to why the race ultimately swung their way.
Inter had agreed personal terms with Palestra and reached a broad understanding with Atalanta over a fee in the region of €50 million.
Despite that progress, the player chose the Premier League, a decision that appears to have been shaped by a longer-standing connection with Chelsea.
