Pep Guardiola has admitted that Chelsea’s added rest this week hands them a key advantage ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley.

Manchester City moved to two points adrift of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table with the victory, setting up a dramatic final ten days of the season where the destination of the league trophy is still up in the air.

But attention now turns to Wembley as City bid for their second piece of silverware in the FA Cup final against Chelsea on Saturday, with Guardiola keeping one eye on London as he made six changes to his starting XI against Crystal Palace from last week’s 3-0 win over Brentford.

Guardiola also addressed the impending departure of Bernardo Silva, with the outgoing City captain having featured in Wednesday’s win, in what were among the most reflective comments of his post-match press conference.

Foden has something that’s not on tactical boards, says Pep

Asked about Foden’s five-star display against the Eagles as the England international justified his selection with two first-half assists, Guardiola reached for language that went well beyond the tactical.

“In these games you need the quality, spark, talent, vision, something that’s not on tactical boards, not in meetings, not in videos, not in training,” the Manchester City manager said of Foden.

“It’s receiving the ball in small spaces, creating something that just good players can deliver. And I’m really pleased for him!”

Foden has endured an indifferent few years at City since spearheading his boyhood club to a record fourth successive Premier League title in 2024, though Guardiola has defended the forward time and time again publicly in the last 18 months.

The Catalan coach urged Foden to “never forget who you are” earlier this week and Wednesday’s performance suggested the message has been absorbed.

Guardiola: Chelsea hold rest advantage for FA Cup final

On the subject of rotation for Saturday’s FA Cup final, Guardiola was unusually candid about the fatigue equation City are navigating compared to their opponents.

“There’s the FA Cup Final but after Bournemouth. Chelsea have been all week at home, training and preparing,” the 55-year-old added.

“We have to travel to London, they will be at home with their wife and kids. So that is fatigue and fatigue and fatigue – and I have full confidence in the whole squad.

“I thought we needed energy and Savio (Savinho) had an incredible game, Antoine (Semenyo) and Omar (Marmoush) as well scoring – always they score when they’re close.

“In general, it was really, really good against a team that always creates problems. Really pleased – three goals against Brentford, three goals here, I cannot ask for more!

“Now just incredibly focus; two rests and focus on the final. It’s a pleasure to go to the cathedral of English football again to play the final and hopefully the result will be better than the last two times.”

City have lost their last two FA Cup finals against Manchester United and Crystal Palace – and Guardiola has been open about his belief that officiating decisions played a role in both defeats. The prospect of a third final in as many years gives the Blues the opportunity to settle that score at Wembley this weekend.

Guardiola: There are players that are a little bit more difficult

Asked about replacing the departing Silva in the summer transfer window, Guardiola was philosophical but clear-eyed about the scale of the challenge.

“Everything is replaceable in football and life. With players, there’s another one, sporting directors, managers – it happens,” he said. “But there are players that it’s a little bit more difficult, with what happens on and off the pitch.”

Guardiola is not suggesting Silva cannot be replaced, he is suggesting the totality of what he provides, both as a footballer and as a presence within the club, makes the task considerably harder than a simple position-for-position swap.

It is a sentiment entirely consistent with his emotional post-Arsenal tribute to Silva in April, wherein he warned he would cry if he spoke too much about the Portuguese. City director of football Hugo Viana will be well aware of the challenge that awaits him this summer.
