Chelsea are closing in on signing midfielder Lamine Camara.
The Blues are also making progress on a ‘very big name’ in midfield to replace Enzo Fernandez, according to Foot Mercato.
Chelsea have lost Andrey Santos and are preparing for the departure of Fernandez.
While many people expected Camara to be the all-in-one replacement, it appears Chelsea are targeting a marquee name to partner Moises Caicedo.
They have been linked with Alex Scott and Adam Wharton, but their clubs are not ready to part ways with them.
It is unclear which midfielder will be brought in, but manager Xabi Alonso will be happy for the diversity of his options.
A new midfielder arriving will likely force Dario Essugo out of the club on loan in search of playing time.
Chelsea could have Romeo Lavia, Caicedo, Valentin Barco, Camara, Jordan Henderson and a new midfielder competing for the starting berth.
It’s early days, but the Blues look formidable enough to at least finish in the top four comfortably, although whispers of a Premier League title challenge are premature.
Chelsea have done a decent job in this transfer window compared to their previous markets under BlueCo, where they have shopped recklessly.
They have added experience, brought in a physical presence at the back, signed a decent left-winger, and acquired a more reliable goalkeeper.
They have also trimmed their bloated squad to make things more manageable for Alonso.
If Chelsea sign a marquee midfielder, finishing in the Champions League spots is achievable.
The Blues have started well, winning their first two games, but Brighton & Hove Albion will provide a stern test of their mettle tomorrow.
