Summer signing came off the bench after his goalkeeper mistakes
Chelsea were beaten 3-2 at Stamford Bridge in a thrilling Carabao Cup semi-final first leg tie against Arsenal.
Two second-half strikes by substitute Alejandro Garnacho kept Chelsea in the tie but were not enough to help them bring a positive result with them to the Emirates Stadium for the second leg in three weeks’ time.
Arsenal held on to claim victory and consign new Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior to defeat in his first home game in charge.
Dom Smith was at Stamford Bridge to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…
Robert Sanchez 3
Made two critical errors which were directly responsible for Arsenal’s two goals. First, he tried to claim a corner from which White headed in. Then White’s cross squirmed through him and Gyokeres tapped in. Then let in a third, only to make an outstanding save to deny Mikel Merino.
Josh Acheampong 5
Some nice runs forward with the ball but got caught once or twice and was taken off.
Wesley Fofana 5
Committed a cynical foul on Gyokeres, showing his frustration when 2-0 down, and was sold by Zubimendi’s dummy for the third goal.
Trevoh Chalobah 5
Chelsea’s best centre-back but caught out on an occasion early in the first half. OK otherwise. Decent in the air.
Marc Cucurella 6
Tenacious throughout, trying to keep Chelsea on the ball and in possession when under intense pressure from the visitors.
Enzo Fernandez 6
The engine in the middle of the park for Chelsea, but they were all too often overrun.
Andrey Santos 6
The deepest midfielder in Moises Caicedo’s absence. Had a better first half than second, unlike Chelsea. Pressed well but anonymous for long periods.
Estevao 7
An eight-out-of-ten performance reduced to a seven because of a petulant booking for asking referee Simon Hooper to book Leandro Trossard. Some excellent runs forward but was too often isolated out there on the right. A crucial part of Chelsea’s two rallying periods of the game.
Joao Pedro 5
Involved in the Chelsea goal but otherwise very quiet, struggling to make a telling impact on another big game.
Pedro Neto 7
As up for it as anyone in blue. Chelsea just needed more players in the same full-throttle state of mind. Things admittedly didn’t quite work out for him though. Grabbed the assist for Chelsea’s first goal.
Marc Guiu 4
Really given a hard time by William Saliba and Gabriel. Just wasn’t allowed the time or space to do anything. Subbed off.
Subs:
Alejandro Garnacho (Guiu, 53’) 8
Chelsea’s super sub on the night, coming on and scoring twice to keep the Blues in this two-legged tie. Both were tidy finishes.
Benoit Badiashile (Acheampong, 53’) 4
Poor. Made one really clumsy foul which saw him booked, and backed off needlessly for the Zubimendi goal.
Jorrel Hato (Fofana, 75’) N/A
Shim Mheuka (Joao Pedro, 81’) N/A
Tosin Adarabioyo (Cucurella, 81’) N/A
Not used: Jorgensen, Essugo, George, Buonanotte
