Varied fortunes for fringe players as Liam Rosenior made eight changes
Liam Rosenior’s reign as Chelsea head coach began in fine fashion with a 5-1 win over Charlton in the FA Cup third round.
The Blues led 1-0 at half-time thanks to a goal from Jorrel Hato but really turned on the style after the break.
Despite an effort from Charlton's Miles Leaburn which denied them a clean sheet, further strikes from Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Pedro Neto and Enzo Fernandez ensured Chelsea finished with some gloss to the scoreline despite the match having been more closely-fought than the final score made it appear.
Dom Smith was at the Valley to rate the Chelsea players’ performances...
Filip Jorgensen 6
Made a splendid save just before conceding to the hosts from a corner.
Josh Acheampong 6
Carried the ball forward well and got into some good attacking positions. Even forced goalkeeper Will Mannion into a fine save from range at 0-0.
Tosin Adarabioyo 6
Scored from close range to double Chelsea’s lead. Not much of the defending Chelsea had to do fell his way.
Benoit Badiashile 4
Made one really poor pass and got himself booked inside five minutes. Not a great showing from the Frenchman.
Jorrel Hato 7
Scored the first goal of the Rosenior era as he finished fiercely into the corner just when Chelsea had been struggling for a breakthrough. It’s been a positive week for the teenager, following decent showing against Manchester City and Fulham.
Andrey Santos 7
Good in possession for Chelsea. The man Rosenior trusted to knit everything together in the middle of the park.
Moises Caicedo 6
Kept the game ticking over with short passes left and right, but did very little else.
Jamie Gittens 6
Charlton defended diligently and limited the space available to the former Borussia Dortmund man. Impressed in first-half but was very quiet before making way for Estevao.
Facundo Buonanotte 7
Took a knock to the back in a first-half where he tried to force the issue but it wouldn’t quite fall. Then, early in the second half, his free-kick put it on a plate for Tosin to double the lead. Lively.
Alejandro Garnacho 5
Endeavoured to surge forward with the ball where he could, but had a frustrating evening and was ultimately subbed off.
Marc Guiu 8
Grabbed the assist for Hato’s goal in a quiet first half for the Spaniard, but in the second half was much more impactful. Spread play, held the ball up, and scored Chelsea’s third.
Subs:
Estevao (Gittens, 66’) 7
Lively and bright off the bench, making the goalkeeper work on more than one occasion.
Enzo Fernandez (Buonanotte, 70’) 7
Came on and offered a different threat, forcing a good stop over the bar from Mannion before scoring the fifth goal from the spot with a suitably thumped spot-kick.
Liam Delap (Guiu, 70’) 5
Asked questions of the Charlton defence but missed a decent chance.
Pedro Neto (Garnacho, 85’) N/A
Scored Chelsea’s fourth, showing his impact off the bench.
Wesley Fofana (Hato, 85’) N/A
Not used: Sanchez, Essugo, Joao Pedro, Chalobah
