Defender bombed down the flank to provide a new attacking threat
The Blues, in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, made a dreadful start as they fell behind to Ryan Gravenberch’s long-distance curler after only six minutes.
Liverpool were far better in those early knockings but Chelsea regrouped and levelled through Enzo Fernandez’s free-kick. A delivery into the box for team-mates, it flew all the way into the net.
An intriguing second half delivered an offside disallowed goal for both teams both nothing that stood as the match ended level to keep Chelsea’s hopes of European football alive.
Dom Smith was on hand to rate the Chelsea players’ performances…
Filip Jorgensen 6
Even though Gravenberch’s opener was a fine strike, Jorgensen could have done better to cover more of his goal. Made a fine stop to deny Dominik Szoboszlai. Some tidy footwork too.
Malo Gusto 5
Not much of an attacking impact despite being deployed as a right wing-back. Hard to see him starting over Reece James in the weeks ahead now the captain is back.
Wesley Fofana 6
Didn’t get a touch on Fernandez’s goal and told the Argentine so as they celebrated. Defended well.
Levi Colwill 6
A big day for the Englishman as he made his first start since the Club World Cup final last summer. Good at clearing the danger in the air. Came through a knock in the second half by shaking it off.
Jorrel Hato 5
Did a job in the back three for Chelsea but picked up a booking for a foul on Jeremie Frimpong.
Constant threat down the left as he looked to join in with attacks, and that was Chelsea’s biggest weapon all afternoon.
Andrey Santos 5
Struggled to contain Liverpool’s midfield and was the first Blues player substituted.
Moises Caicedo 6
Had to cover a lot of the ground Santos didn’t make up. Not his best outing, mind.
Cole Palmer 6
Unfortunate that an offside in the build-up saw his goal to put Chelsea ahead 2-1 disallowed. Still so far off his best.
Enzo Fernandez 7
Scored directly from a free-kick delivery to keep up his scoring run. Was booked later on.
Joao Pedro 6
Had an off day as he struggled to influence proceedings at Anfield. Shot just wide at 1-1. Had one second-half chance.
Subs
Reece James (Santos, 63’) 6
Came on with half an hour to go and was important in driving the ball out from the back for the Blues.
Not used: Slonina, Acheampong, Tosin, Chalobah, Lavia, Eboue, Kavuma-McQueen
