Chelsea have sacked head coach Liam Rosenior ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley, naming under-21s boss Calum McFarlane interim head coach for the rest of the season.

They travelled to Brighton on Tuesday after four straight league defeats without scoring, then lost 3-0 at the Amex to make it five in a row without a goal for the first time since 1912. The club later confirmed Rosenior’s departure in a Wednesday evening statement.

Rosenior and his staff were thanked for their professionalism following his mid-season appointment, and McFarlane will lead the team with support from existing backroom staff until season’s end.

The decision was not taken lightly, with recent results and performances below required standards. McFarlane now takes charge for the run-in.

Targets for the remainder of the campaign include European qualification and progress in the FA Cup, with a process of self-reflection planned to make the right long-term head coach appointment.
