Chelsea have emerged as serious contenders to sign Darwin Nunez from Al-Hilal.

The former Liverpool striker has been frozen out at the Saudi Pro League side, following the arrival of Karim Benzema from Al-Ittihad in January.

Nunez has been omitted from the squad for the Saudi Pro League due to foreign player registration rules as a result, with the Uruguayan only able to feature in continental competition.

The player’s representatives are now seeking an exit in the summer, just months after his £46m arrival from Liverpool. Nunez’s agents have offered the 26-year-old to various English clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

According to the Chronicle, Chelsea have now emerged as a serious option. The West Londoners are considering Liam Delap’s future at Stamford Bridge after an underwhelming debut season, with loan and permanent exits being explored for the summer. Nunez is viewed as a potential option to replace Delap and compete with Joao Pedro for the centre-forward role.

Nunez has scored nine goals in 24 games for Al-Hilal, having hit 40 in 143 appearances for Liverpool across three seasons at Anfield.
