Chelsea are “set to approach” Manchester United over a deal to sign Alejandro Garnacho after initial talks with the 20-year-old’s camp, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.

The Italian transfer guru contends the London club will formalise their interest in Garnacho in an effort to jump ahead of Napoli, who have already seen a bid worth up to €50 million for the winger rejected by United.

Old Trafford officials are reluctantly open to selling the Argentinian international due to the club’s financial situation.

The acute pressure of the Premier League’s Profits and Sustainability Rules is severely limiting United’s ability to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad in the January window without first selling.

And, for a variety of reasons, there are few candidates in the Old Trafford dressing room who will command a large transfer fee that the team could also afford to lose.

Garnacho, despite his obvious talents and considerable scope for continued improvement, is a poor fit in Amorim’s 3-4-3 system, lacking the skillset to play as a wingback or an attacking midfielder.

The young Argentine is best deployed as a left-winger in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 system; formations used by Napoli and Chelsea respectively.

It’s evident, therefore, why both the player and his club would be open to a transfer that would have felt impossible just six months ago.

Chelsea are keenly aware of the economic struggles at Old Trafford and will hope to exploit them to land yet another talented youngster to add to Enzo Maresca’s squad with executives from Stamford Bridge ready to “discuss” a move with their Old Trafford

Tweet: “Chelsea are set to approach Man United for Alejandro Garnacho, as expected. Napoli remain keen but no agreement at €50m package, rejected by Man United; now also working on Adeyemi deal as revealed.

Chelsea spoke to player’s camp and will now discuss with Man United.”
