Chelsea have completed the signing of Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117 million, €137 million, a record fee for an English player and the fifth most expensive transfer in history. The club said in a statement that the 23-year-old has signed at Stamford Bridge until 2033.

The previous English record was £116 million, paid by Manchester City earlier this month to sign Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Rogers underwent his medical on Monday after returning from the World Cup in the United States, where England finished third.

The move is also a Chelsea record, surpassing the £107 million paid for Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.

Chelsea had pursued Rogers for two years and secured his arrival despite not playing in the Champions League this season. They beat Arsenal to the deal after Arsenal declined to match Aston Villa’s price.

Rogers’ departure is another setback for Unai Emery following Youri Tielemans’ transfer to Manchester United and Lucas Digne’s move to Paris Saint-Germain being imminent. Middlesbrough will receive 20% of the fee under a sell-on clause from his 2024 switch to Villa.

He scored 21 goals in 85 league matches for Villa and played a key part in May’s Europa League final win over Freiburg. Last season he produced 14 goals and 11 assists in 55 games, and at the World Cup he started three times, appeared in most other matches, and registered one assist.
