When picking between Andrey Santos and Romeo Lavia to partner Moises Caicedo in midfield, the divide often comes down to Santos giving you more goal threat and more physicality; and Lavia giving you more finesse on the ball and more tempo control.
But it’s a bad idea to imply that Santos can’t also keep it tidy. Just look at the stats from Tuesday night.
Santos was given the nod ahead of Lavia, presumably in part to add a bite of bite to a Chelsea team preparing for a physical game. But don’t sleep on Santos’ passing. Just check the stats on FotMob.
He completed 38 of 38 in the game, keeping it really simple. He played no long balls, and just two into the final third. But that was his role – break play up, get the ball to Cole Palmer, Enzo Fernandez or Caicedo to do something more aggressive with it.
Meanwhile his 9 defensive contributions put him behind just Wesley Fofana (10) on his team.
Chelsea and Barcelona have joined Arsenal in the chase for the Premier League’s outstanding young breakthrough attacker of the season.
The news about Joao Pedro wanting to leave Chelsea is gradually cranking up as the Spanish media start to try and help out Barcelona by increasing the pressure.
