Chelsea’s hopes of securing Champions League football hinge on their final two matches of the Premier League season, starting with a crucial fixture tonight at home to Manchester United. But those ambitions have been dealt a heavy blow by a depleted attack, with Enzo Maresca facing a selection dilemma that could significantly alter the Blues’ line-up.
Nicolas Jackson’s red card during the defeat at Newcastle rules him out of both remaining matches, leaving Chelsea without a recognised striker. With Christopher Nkunku and Marc Guiu also sidelined, the situation in the forward department is threadbare.
Pedro Neto is expected to step in as the focal point of the Chelsea attack. The Portuguese forward previously deputised during Jackson’s earlier absence this season and remains the most familiar option in the role. However, with Jadon Sancho unavailable due to his loan agreement from Manchester United, Maresca’s options on the wings are equally limited.
This could prompt a reshuffle in Chelsea’s attacking shape. One possibility is the use of Cole Palmer as a false nine — a tactic that yielded success earlier in the campaign. Deploying Palmer centrally would allow Neto to revert to a wide position, where he has proven dangerous in one-on-one situations.

Another alternative lies in promoting from within. Tyrique George, the 19-year-old winger who started both legs of the Conference League semi-final against Djurgarden, could be handed a Premier League debut in a pressure-packed setting. While talented, George remains untested at this level, and Maresca may opt for more experienced personnel.
Midfield configuration is also in flux. Should Palmer be used up front, Enzo Fernandez could be deployed in a more advanced role. Moises Caicedo is likely to retain his place in midfield, potentially alongside Romeo Lavia, who continues to build fitness. Reece James is expected to return at right-back after overcoming illness.
With absences mounting, Maresca’s XI may read as follows:
Predicted Chelsea Line-up:Sanchez; James, Chalobah, Colwill, Cucurella; Caicedo, Lavia, Fernandez; Palmer, Neto, Madueke

Despite the squad constraints, the equation remains simple: win both games and Chelsea finish in the Premier League top five, ensuring their return to Europe’s top competition. How Maresca navigates the line-up tonight could prove decisive.
