Chelsea return to Premier League action with Newcastle United arriving at Stamford Bridge, and the home side head into the match with a few selection dilemmas. Squad availability, suspensions and recent performances have all shaped the conversation ahead of kick off, particularly around the goalkeeping position.
With Newcastle United capable of punishing mistakes and Chelsea seeking a response after their midweek European disappointment, team selection could have a major impact on the result.
One of the biggest talking points before Chelsea face Newcastle United concerns the goalkeeper. Filip Jorgensen has recently moved ahead of Robert Sanchez in the pecking order, starting high profile fixtures against Aston Villa and Paris Saint Germain.
However, the Danish keeper endured a difficult night during the 5-2 Champions League defeat to PSG. A couple of costly errors quickly reopened the debate around Chelsea’s first choice between the posts.
Despite that performance, the Chelsea manager appeared relaxed about the situation during his pre match briefing. He insisted that Jorgensen remains ready for the challenge, stating that the goalkeeper is “for sure” prepared to start against Newcastle United.
That comment suggests continuity may be preferred, even though Sanchez remains a strong alternative if a change becomes necessary.

Chelsea will have to adjust their attacking plans due to the suspension of Pedro Neto. The winger received an additional one match ban and a £70,000 fine from the Football Association after his reaction to a red card against Arsenal.
His week may yet become more complicated. UEFA opened disciplinary proceedings after he pushed a ball boy during the closing stages of the defeat to PSG, and that situation could still lead to another one game ban in European competition.
Jamie Gittens could offer a timely boost for Chelsea against Newcastle United. The winger has returned to training after recovering from a hamstring problem and may feature if he proves his fitness.
Chelsea continue to manage several injury situations carefully. The club are monitoring Estevao’s hamstring problem and the coaching staff have stressed the need to be “careful” to avoid a setback. As a result, the youngster is expected to miss the visit of Newcastle United.
Levi Colwill has resumed training with the first team after a serious knee injury suffered on the opening day of pre season. The defender has followed a specialised recovery programme at Cobham, though this match is expected to arrive too soon for his return to competitive action.
Chelsea predicted XI: Jorgensen, James, Fofana, Chalobah, Cucurella, Caicedo, Santos, Fernandez, Palmer, Garnacho, Pedro.
Kick off is scheduled for 5:30pm GMT on Saturday, March 14, 2026, with live coverage on Sky Sports. With Newcastle United presenting a physical and organised challenge, Chelsea will need a composed performance to secure three points in front of their home support.
