Enzo Maresca has been put into a real mess by his players two weeks in a row, there’s no denying that.
A red card for goalkeeper Robert Sanchez against Manchester United after 5 minutes last week was a total catastrophe, no doubt about it. Trevoh Chalobah’s red yesterday was at least in the second half, but was also pretty damaging.

You can’t blame the coach for the reds – you can blame him for what he did after, however.
Against Manchester United he took off a defender the moment the red came out, using up a sub and instantly conceding the initiative. Even against his reinforced back line, United scored twice with ease, and Chelsea were left with no attackers on the pitch to even attempt to get back into the game.
Yesterday was a similar story – a second centre back was a necessary change once Chalobah walked. But then changing your other central defender and taking off both your wingers once again
We all know football – sometimes the best way to defend is to attack. If you have absolutely nothing going forward, a team like Brighton can just camp in your half. They scored 3 in the 25 minutes after the red card pretty easily. Having some pace on the break to threaten them would perhaps have made them think twice about committing so many men forward.
Who knows – you might even catch them on the break and grab a second. However Maresca learned nothing from his mistakes of a week ago. Bobby Vincent has called this a “turning point” in terms of the relationship between the coach and fans at Stamford Bridge, who were dismayed to see the surrender come twice in two weeks.
