After ending up losing finalists in the Subway Women’s League Cup Final for the last three years, Chelsea lifted the trophy with a 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

Chelsea were ahead in seven minutes from a breakaway goal, Lauren James sending Mayra Ramirez through on goal and although Ayaka Yamashita made the save, the ball rebound off Laia Aleixandri for Ramirez to knock over the line.

Hannah Hampton turned a Leila Ouahabi shot round the post and saved a powerful strike from Aoba Fujino, as City responded well.

Ramirez got away again and rounded the goalkeeper but with Aleixandri back on the line, the Colombian striker only found the side netting.

Soon after Yamashita denied Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Fujino burst into the box and whipped a shot into the back of the Chelsea net.

Khadija Shaw nearly made it a quick turnaround in City’s favour but Hannah Hampton blocked the goal-bound effort with her boot.

Chelsea were back in front inside the last quarter of an hour, Lucy Bronze doing well to keep the move going and the cross from Ramirez deflected into her own net by the unfortunate Yui Hasegawa.

Manchester City meet Chelsea again this Wednesday in their second of four consecutive clashes, this Champions League quarter-final 1st leg being at Joie Stadium, live on TNT Sports 1, DAZN and DAZN Women’s Football YouTube with an 8pm kick off. The same channels are showing Arsenal’s tie away to Real Madrid on Tuesday, at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano with a 5.45pm (UK time) start.
