Chelsea are working to sign midfielder Jordan Henderson from Brentford, with the Stamford Bridge club leading the chase amid interest from several Premier League sides, according to NY Times.

Brentford are prepared to grant Henderson a free transfer, with the situation amicable between player and club. He has a year left on the deal agreed after joining as a free agent from Ajax last summer.

Henderson was in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at the World Cup this year and made one substitute appearance in the final group match. He then broke his left arm after slipping while climbing over an advertising board during the last-16 win over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca, underwent surgery, and stayed with the team as they lost to Argentina in the semi-finals.

Chelsea have pivoted towards experience this summer after recent youth-focused windows. They previously targeted Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka, seeing an £8m bid rejected, and have also expressed interest in 32-year-old John Stones. Andrey Santos has joined Manchester United in a deal worth up to £50m ($66.5m).

Henderson started 22 league games for Brentford last season and made a further 10 appearances from the bench. He played 57 times for Ajax between 2023 and 2025.

The midfielder came through Sunderland’s academy before moving to Liverpool in 2011, spending 12 seasons, captaining the club and lifting the Premier League and Champions League in 492 appearances. He later joined Al Ettifaq in 2023 before moving to Ajax, then Brentford.
