Chelsea have lost 2-0 at Ipswich after a showing performance from the Blues. It’s the first time Ipswich have won at Portman Road since 2002.
After a long run of games where this Chelsea team really looked like they had made a step change to return to the elite level of Premier League sides, a disappointing draw followed by a naive defeat followed by a pretty shocking loss to a 19th placed team have returned everyone to earth.
We’re still ahead of where we thought we’d be – we expected far more of these games this season given how many we’ve seen in the last couple of years. But after such a positive run where we saw real energy and commitment from a well rested and well motivated team, it’s shocking to drop back to the sort of tepid showings that marked the last two seasons.
You can see Chelsea’s ratings from SofaScore in the image embedded here:
Chelsea’s full time ratings after Ipswich defeat.
With 5.0, Filip Jorgensen was Chelsea’s lowest rated player in the game – presumably mainly down to the penalty he gave away. That was pretty soft, and that feels harsh.
Axel Disasi is the lowest rated outfield player with a 6.1. WhoScored agreed, giving him a 5.37 and Tosin Adarabioyo a 5.95. Both of them clearly didn’t provide the kind of solidity you’d want against a team which we should be brushing aside. Either way, conceding 2 isn’t good enough.
The strongest version of this Chelsea side doesn’t have either of those two in it – but the weakest version of this side should still be able to beat Ipswich pretty comfortably. Despite the individual ratings, the issue was as much the failure to score goals, which was what gave the home team the platform to earn a historic win.
