Sunderland winger Chemsdine Talbi delivered a major World Cup moment as Morocco progressed on penalties after a dramatic late equaliser against the Netherlands.

Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey led the line in Ronald Koeman's 3-4-2-1 and played 71 minutes before Wout Weghorst came on as the Dutch tried to see the game out. According to Sunderland Echo, it was a night of mixed emotions on Wearside.

Talbi came off the bench for Morocco, supplying the assist that took the tie to extra time, then converted his penalty in the shoot-out. The cameo underlined his growing reputation after an impressive first season on Wearside.

Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen started for the Netherlands. Robin Roefs was in the squad but did not feature, while Lutsharel Geertruida, who spent last season on loan at Sunderland, was also unused.

Brobbey's elimination capped a strong personal tournament that included an earlier brace and a knockout start which highlighted his rise.

Elsewhere, Omar Alderete's Paraguay also progressed on penalties, although the Sunderland defender missed out with a knee injury.

An eventful World Cup round for Sunderland's contingent, with decisive contributions and contrasting fortunes across the ties.
