Chiesa Future at Liverpool Faces Defining Summer

Game Time Shapes Chiesa Decision

Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool future has moved from quiet uncertainty to open discussion. The Italian forward, signed from Juventus in 2024, has now made clear that his next step will depend on one simple currency, minutes.

Chiesa arrived at Liverpool with pedigree, pace and a reputation built on big European nights. Yet his time at Anfield has never quite settled into rhythm. Across the 2025/26 campaign, he made only one Premier League start, with most of his league appearances coming from the bench. For a player of his age and standing, that creates an obvious tension.

“I want to play and if I don’t find continuity in the Premier League I’ll need to find it elsewhere,” Chiesa told Gazzetta dello Sport.

That line matters because it is neither emotional nor reckless. It is practical. Chiesa is not demanding guarantees, nor is he burning bridges. He is simply stating the reality facing any elite footballer who needs rhythm, trust and competitive edge.

Iraola Arrival Offers Fresh Assessment

Andoni Iraola’s arrival at Liverpool changes the conversation, even if it does not resolve it. Arne Slot’s departure means several players can reasonably expect a clean slate. For Chiesa, pre-season in the United States now becomes more than a fitness exercise. It becomes a trial of fit, role and intent.

“This season just gone, I got next to no minutes. I’ll go to the U.S. for pre-season then I’ll talk to the club and Iraola and we’ll see.”

That is the sensible approach. Liverpool need to assess whether Chiesa can be more than a squad option. Chiesa needs to understand whether Iraola sees him as a meaningful part of the attacking rotation. Both sides can be respectful and still reach a difficult conclusion.

Liverpool Relationship Remains Strong

There is no bitterness in Chiesa’s words. If anything, there is an understanding of how football clubs work when injuries, absences and squad shortages collide.

“I’ve honestly not played a lot since the start of 2026.

“I’ve got a great relationship with Liverpool. Back in January the club and Slot said I couldn’t leave. They needed me. It was about numbers. We were in crisis.

“I understood the situation and stayed, keeping a smile on my face. We’re still talking about Liverpool. Last year they allowed me to win the Premier League.”

That final point is important. Chiesa knows the value of the club, the scale of Liverpool and the significance of his Premier League medal. He also knows sentiment cannot replace match sharpness.

Italy Return Could Appeal

Links with Inter Milan and Como make sense because Italy understands Chiesa’s qualities. Serie A may offer him the continuity he has lacked, while Liverpool may decide that his value is better realised through a sale than another season of sporadic involvement.

Asked about those possibilities, Chiesa was clear.

“The important thing for me is game-time. I am not presumptuous enough to say: I have to be a starter. I am ready to fight for my place anywhere.”

That is the line which defines the summer. Chiesa is willing to compete. Liverpool must now decide whether there is a proper fight available for him.

For Chiesa and Liverpool, this is not about failure. It is about timing, opportunity and whether a gifted player can still find a convincing role at Anfield under a new manager.
