Wolves stepped up their pre-season with a 2-0 victory at Doncaster, sealed by two late goals that highlighted several standout displays.

Fer Lopez struck first on 82 minutes, Andre finding him as Wolves pounced on a defensive mistake, before Tawanda Chirewa won and converted a penalty he took himself.

Chirewa has featured heavily in pre-season, often as a makeshift nine or as a 10. He ended his wait for a goal and impressed with sharp movement and neat link play with Lopez. After three difficult loans, his future may be away from the club next season, yet he is doing himself justice this summer.

Lopez, back from a minor groin issue after appearing behind closed doors against Estoril, offered fans a first look of the summer. Touted to be important for Peixoto, he showed technical quality and vision, attributes that could unlock chances and add goals.

Tommy Doyle’s pre-season has been positive, seemingly pushing him into Peixoto’s plans. Wolves still want a midfielder after Joao Gomes’ exit and, while Doyle may not start, he looks set to stay involved. His pressing was intense and a one-two with Adam Armstrong preceded a precise pass for Tom Edozie, who should have scored.

Sixteen-year-old Jerome Abbey, Wolves’ youngest Premier League debutant after featuring at Burnley on the final day last season, earned a surprise start. Filling in for Andre as the lone six, he showed composure and coped with the physicality. Wolves cannot rely on a 16-year-old if Andre is sidelined, but Abbey took his chance and is one to watch.
