Birmingham City have received a triple injury update ahead of their clash against Watford on Monday evening

Chris Davies has confirmed that Ethan Laird is unlikely to feature again for Birmingham City until at least February of next year in a fresh blow for the Second City outfit

The former Manchester United player is currently out of action due to a hamstring injury, with his last appearance coming in a 3-0 loss to runaway league leaders Coventry City on 27 September.

The full-back almost managed an hour in the defeat to the Sky Blues, but was forced off with an issue that is now set to cost him multiple months of his career.

Laird played in each of the Blues’ first opening seven Championship fixtures this season, including four starts, and contributed one assist. Davies' side have picked up in recent times, recovering from an underwhelming start to the season to claim three consecutive home victories - scoring four goals in each of those encounters - and dreams of a fresh promotion push are alive once more.

However, Laird's absence will come as a blow in spite of Tomoki Iwata's impressive showings of late after being moved to right-back from his favoured central midfield position, and Davies has also offered updates on Lee Buchanan and Scott Wright, who are also both on the sidelines at the moment.

Davies has confirmed that Laird is unlikely to make a return to training until at least February, despite initial hopes he could be back as soon as January.

However, he is optimistic that Wright, who has been absent for the last nine months, can be back in the side around the new year, while suggesting Buchanan, who has missed all of 2025 with a knee injury, won’t be far behind him.

“Scott is a bit ahead of Lee,” said Davies, via Birmingham Live.

“Scott is going to be very light training with the team again in the next few weeks, which is really great news.

“He’s worked exceptionally hard. It’s nine months he’s been out, February 22 against Reading, and it’s been a long road for him.

“He’s in end-stage rehab and will re-join light training but we don’t expect to see him in competitive action until the New Year because there’s a lot of steps to go.

“Lee is a bit behind that schedule.

“Ethan is well behind.

“It’s February I think where he’s due to be back at that point of joining the team again.”

Birmingham will be hoping that each of these three players can make as quick a recovery as they can in order to bolster the first team squad.

Davies’ side are aiming for a promotion push this year in their first season back in the Championship.

The Blues won the League One title in the previous campaign with a dominant 111 points to their name.

Birmingham face the challenge of seven games across December, so having as many members of the squad available as possible could prove key to maintaining a strong run of form to go into 2026.

Ethan Laird setback is a blow for Birmingham City

Laird has proven an important part of the Birmingham first team squad over the last year or so, meaning his absence now is a real blow for the side.

That he won’t be back until at least February could lead to the club considering their options in the January market.

Laird was providing versatility by playing on both wings, and the team are short in full-backs at the moment.

If Buchanan can come back in the new year and hit the ground running, then that will make up for Laird’s absence, but he will surely take time to get up to speed due to the severity of his injury issue.
