Hamer made the move to English football when he joined Coventry from Dutch side PEC Zwolle in the summer of 2020, and he went on to enjoy a successful three-year spell with the Sky Blues, scoring 17 goals and providing 25 assists in 129 appearances.

The 29-year-old departed to join Sheffield United in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £15 million following their promotion to the Premier League, and while the Blades have had mixed fortunes during his spell at the club, he has been one of their standout performers in recent years.

It was a disappointing campaign for United last season as they finished 13th in the Championship table, but it was another strong individual campaign for Hamer, who netted seven goals and registered 12 assists in 39 appearances.

Sheffield United have already lost one of their star men this summer, with winger Andre Brooks joining Championship rivals Norwich City for an initial fee of £8 million, and it seems Hamer could follow him out of the exit door before the end of the window.

Hamer is now in the final year of his current deal at Bramall Lane, and while Wilder has made no secret of his desire to keep him in South Yorkshire, there has been no progress on a potential new contract.

As they prepare for life back in the Premier League after winning the Championship title last season, Coventry have been linked with a move for Hamer in recent weeks, and Wilder has now confirmed that the Sky Blues have made a bid for the midfielder.

The offer has not yet been accepted or rejected, with Wilder disclosing that the proposal is currently being "discussed" by the United hierarchy, and while he insisted that the club are determined to get the "right fee", he admitted that they are reluctant to lose him on a free transfer next summer.

Hamer departed before current Coventry manager Lampard took over at the CBS Arena, but it seems he is still a big fan of the former Netherlands youth international, with Wilder revealing that he is hoping to bring him back to the club this summer.

"Cards on the table here, and I'm not chucking Gus under the bus, Gus is ambitious and there's been a bid made by one of his former clubs where the owner really likes him, the manager's speaking to him this week and really likes him, the supporters really like him," Wilder told BBC Radio Sheffield.

"There's an opportunity of potentially a big increase on his salary, length of the contract and going to a club where he's really highly thought of.

"Does he want to stay here?

"If he wanted to stay here, then we would have engaged in contract negotiations and that hasn't been the case.

"I'm not stitching Gus up here.

"If the window shuts and he's here, he'll play and he'll have to give his everything to the shirt, which is everything I demand.

"I don't want to lose him, of course I don't, because he's a top player.

It remains to be seen whether Coventry's bid for Hamer will be accepted, but it feels like only a matter of time until a deal is agreed between the two clubs, particularly with the midfielder believed to be keen to return to the CBS Arena.
