Christensen outlines Barcelona ambitions after injury spell and renewal: ‘Very grateful the club gave me another opportunity’ | OneFootball

When Barcelona lifted the La Liga title in the 2022-23 season under Xavi Hernandez, one of the main protagonists of that title run was Andreas Christensen.

Joining Barça from Chelsea on a free transfer ahead of that season, the Dane went on to establish himself as one of the best central defenders in La Liga.

However, since then, injuries have not allowed him to contribute as much as he would have liked, especially under Hansi Flick.

The ex-Blues defender now says his main objective this season is to rediscover his best form after an injury-hit spell, while insisting Barcelona have everything they need to compete for every major trophy.

Speaking in an interview, during Barcelona’s pre-season training camp in England, as quoted by SPORT, the Danish defender reflected on his fitness, his recent contract renewal and the team’s ambitions under Hansi Flick.

Christensen focused on staying fit

After spending much of the last season and a half battling injuries, Christensen made it clear that his priority is simply being available throughout the campaign.

“I feel good. Obviously, your body notices that we’re training more and with greater intensity, but that’s why we’re here, to get into shape,” he said.

“For me, the objective right now is to be in the best physical condition possible and, above all, complete a season without injuries.”

Asked whether Flick had discussed his role for the coming season, Christensen explained that the message is straightforward.

“I think we all expect the same. My goal is to stay fit, keep improving and return to my best level,” he said.

Unfazed by transfer speculation

Barcelona continue to be linked with central defenders, but Christensen insisted he is not distracted by what happens in the market.

“The transfer market doesn’t depend on me. I focus on myself,” he said.

“I trust my abilities and I know my best level is very high. Every summer Barcelona are linked with many players, but that’s normal. We focus on the players who are here.”

The defender also explained that his difficult run with injuries has only strengthened his determination.

“I’ve had a very difficult season and a half. Now I’m only thinking about getting into the best possible shape, being available all season and getting back to my best version. That’s what I worked very hard on this summer,” he explained.

Happy to stay at Barcelona

Christensen also spoke warmly about extending his contract until 2028.

“I’m very happy and very proud. I’m very grateful that the club has given me another opportunity,” he said.

“I also believe the club trusts that I can return to my best level. This is the perfect place to be. We have a young team with a lot of talent and we play football that I enjoy. It’s a place where I feel secure and where I can continue to grow.”

The Dane also praised the impact made by Barcelona’s academy players during pre-season.

“The competition exists in every position and that makes us all better. The young players have arrived with great intensity and a real desire to show their level.

“The important thing is that they know they can always come to the experienced players if they need anything,” he explained.

Champions League firmly in Barcelona’s sights

Looking ahead to the new season, Christensen left no doubt about the squad’s ambitions.

“We want to win every trophy possible. The Champions League, of course, is one of those objectives,” he said.

“We have to keep doing what we’re doing and believe in it. We’ve shown this is the right path. We only need to improve a few details and trust the players we have.”

He also dismissed concerns that Barcelona’s young squad lack experience.

“We have a good balance. We also have experienced players. Six of our players have played in a World Cup final.

“Even though they’re young, they’ve lived through the biggest experience in football. For me, that’s experience too, and it’s another step forward for Barcelona.”

A huge season ahead for Christensen

Christensen’s words suggest how naturally leadership comes to him, and he seems determined to have a good, injury-free season at Barcelona.

When fit and in form, the Dane has everything it takes to be an ideal central defender for Hansi Flick, and this could finally be the season when Barça see it.

Pre-season gives Christensen an opportunity to train, establish himself in Flick’s set-up and convince the manager to keep him as a starter when La Liga begins.

It remains to be seen whether the former Chelsea man can return to his best level or whether this becomes another season of high expectation but deep disappointment for both player and club.
