Christian Eriksen said in a post that he is home with his family after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine on Sunday, adding that his implantable cardioverter defibrillator worked as intended.

The match at Odense Isstadion was abandoned after the 65th minute when the midfielder appeared to hold his chest and fell. Medical staff from both teams reached him within seconds, and with Denmark leading 2-1 he was taken by ambulance to hospital for tests.

Eriksen’s heart starter, an ICD, is a small device that regulates abnormal heart rhythms and can deliver a lifesaving shock. It did so during the incident, and Eriksen said his recovery has already begun.

He thanked team-mates, on-field medics and the specialist doctors who have treated him over the years, saying the device protected him when required. He plans to focus on recovery, family time and a holiday, and to play football with his children.

Eriksen was fitted with an ICD after suffering a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2021 match with Finland. His former clubs Manchester United, Brentford and Tottenham sent messages of support, while Wolfsburg were in contact with the Danish Football Association regarding his condition. He made 34 appearances for Wolfsburg in 2025-26, and Sunday marked his 151st cap for Denmark since a 2010 debut. Denmark did not qualify for the World Cup that begins on Thursday.
