Manchester City eased into the next round of the FA Cup after defeating Salford City at home with Marc Guéhi scoring his first goal for the citizens.
The Ammies must have thought that they would be at the end of another 8-0 hammering when the Premier League side got off the mark early in the game.
Full-back Rayan Aït-Nouri received the ball on the left and put in a low drilled cross that took a deflection off of the unfortunate Alfie Dorrington to put it past goalkeeper Matt Young.
It should have been 2-0 not long after that with Omar Marmoush was played in behind the Salford defence before an excellent finish. The Egyptian's effort was ruled offside although replays indicated that it was the wrong decision with VAR unable to intervene at this stage of the competition.
Pep Guardiola was forced into a change in the 22nd minute of the game when Max Alleyne pulled up with an injury after a rare Salford attack with Ryan McAidoo coming on in his place for just his second appearance.
Despite an early lead, Man City didn't really put Salford to bed as many would have expected. Indeed, James Trafford was forced into a fine stop just before the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern to the first with Man City not under too much pressure but not finishing the game off until the 81st minute. Rayan Cherki did well down the left to put in a cross that eventually came off Marc Guéhi's knee and into the net to make it 2-0.
Karl Robinson will be happy with how his team defended overall, a marked improvement over Salford's last game even if they saw very little of the ball.
Meanwhile, Man City can now turn their attention back to the Premier League ahead of a key game against Newcastle United next.
