Opposing Manager – Ruben Amorim

Amorim’s United have struggled for consistency since his appointment in November 2024, but his work at previous club Sporting CP shows he’s than capable of assembling a side who can challenge for silverware.

In 2021 he guided Sporting to their first Portuguese title in 19 years, before grabbing top spot again in 2024 to help break the Porto-Benfica monopoly of the 21st century.

And while United have struggled in his first 10 months in charge at Old Trafford, recording their worst Premier League finish and lowest points total in 2024/25, they did reach the Europa League final.

Amorim’s teams are known for playing in a high-energy 3-4-3 system, with onus on wide players to defend and attack in equal measure, and two more withdrawn forwards playing off a central striker at the sharp end.

It’s a tactic used to great effect at Sporting, and one that United have continued to work on this season.

Danger Men

Bryan Mbeumo enjoyed his best-ever season in front of goal at Brentford in 2024/25 and has found form early on in his United career since a summer move to Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old has found the net twice in his four appearances so far this season, opening his account with a cleverly disguised finish against Grimsby in United’s League Cup defeat at Blundell Park.

The Cameroon international was on the scoresheet again that weekend in a 3-2 win over Burnley at Old Trafford as a stoppage time penalty from Bruno Fernandes earned their first points of the season.

Portuguese midfielder Fernandes remains a key player as well and currently sits on 99 goals for United heading into Sunday’s showdown.

Pep Guardiola preview

The boss will look ahead to the tie when he faces the media at 13:30 on Friday 12 September.

As always, you can follow Guardiola’s press conference will be available to watch live when signed in on the official Man City app.

Should you be unable to watch in real time, then written recaps and a video replay will be made available across the afternoon.

Previous meeting

The 196th Manchester derby ended in a goalless draw at Old Trafford in April 2025 with Omar Marmoush and Joshua Zirkzee going closest for both sides.

Earlier on that campaign United had snatched a late 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium in December 2024, so City will be looking to regain bragging rights on Sunday afternoon.

Last time out

Contrasting fortunes for both sides in our final matches before the international break, with a second half turnaround by Brighton seeing City lose 2-1 in the south coast.

Manchester United, meanwhile, earned their first win of the season with a dramatic late 3-2 win over newly promoted Burnley.

After three Premier League matches this season, United sit ninth and City 13th heading into this weekend’s clash.
