City will head to Hong Kong this summer for our first pre-season friendly ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Manchester City to travel to Hong Kong as part of 2026/27 preseason tour

We’ll face Italian giants Inter at the Hong Kong Kait Tak Stadium on Saturday 1 August, with the domestic campaign set to start later due to this year’s World Cup.

It won’t be the first time we’ve come up against Inter of course, with the 2023 Champions League final victory over the Nerazzurri one of the greatest nights in our 132-year history.

It also won’t be our maiden outing in Hong Kong, having been there as part of three separate tours in the last 18 years.

Although this year will see us play in the new, state-of-the-art Kai Tak Stadium that was opened in 2024.

Here we’ll remember those previous trips…

Hong Kong Invitational XI 3-1 City, Hong Kong Stadium, 22 May 2008

Captained by Chinese international Sun Jihai in his final game for City, this one proved a step too far in a post-season tour after a long campaign.

Dietmar Hamann put us ahead before Giovane, Festus Biase and Liang Zicheng scored the goals for the hosts in typically hot and humid conditions.

20,000 were there to see what also proved to be Sven-Goran Eriksson’s last game in charge, with the Swede leaving a couple of weeks later.

South China 0-1 City, Hong Kong Stadium, 24 July 2013

Having kicked off pre-season in South Africa, City then flew to Hong Kong for the Premier League Asia Trophy in what was Manuel Pellegrini’s first summer in the hot seat.

Edin Dzeko got the only goal of the game, heading home James Milner’s cross midway through the first half.

Summer signing Alvaro Negredo made an impressive cameo in front of 40,000 fans in his first appearance for the Club before conditions worsened in the closing stages of the game.

City 1-0 Sunderland, Hong Kong Stadium, 27 July 2013

That victory over South China earned us a final with Sunderland a few days later, while Tottenham Hotspur played South China.

And it was the same scoreline and same scorer against the Black Cats, with Dzeko’s sweet strike earning a first trophy at City for Pellegrini.

Dzeko could have had another from the penalty spot in the second half but it wasn’t to be.

There was also another first appearance for a summer signing, with Jesus Navas appearing in a City shirt for the first time.

Pellegrini’s squad building was well under way, with a second Premier League title to come in the season that followed.

Kitchee 1-6 City, Hong Kong Stadium, 24 July 2019

Our most recent trip to Hong Kong came in 2019, when we ripped through Hong Kong’s leading club Kitchee SC.

Pep Guardiola named a strong starting XI, with Leroy Sane’s brace and one apiece from David Silva and Raheem Sterling paving the way for late goals from youngsters, Nabil Touaizi and Iker Pozo.
